Made by Byron Shire resident Benjamin Gilmour, Jirga tells the story of former Australian soldier Mike (Sam Smith) as he returns to Afghanistan, and deadly danger, to find the family of a civilian he accidentally killed during the war. Seeking forgiveness, he puts his life in the hands of the village justice system embodied by the Jirga, the court of tribal elders. While gripping and suspenseful, the film also shows a great restraint, avoiding sensationalism in favour of thoughtfulness, preferring deep purpose to narrative drive. Gilmour has said he wanted to counter the Islamic stereotypes and propaganda to demonstrate the human cost of conflict – civilians trying to survive and damaged and disillusioned soldiers haunted by their action.
