Not the recent Hollywood ladies’ light comedy but a charming and darkly funny drama written and directed by Aussie auteur Heath Davis (Broke). Nicholas Cutler (Alan Dukes) is a jaded and frequently inebriated high school English teacher with a novel behind him, now reduced to trying to instil a love of reading in teenagers who have no interest in literature or learning. In an effort to resurrect his former sense of purpose, he writes a new book – trouble is, it’s a zombie story. Heath Davis based this film on his own experiences as a teacher. Shot in Katoomba and featuring Western Sydney locals as extras, Book Week’s tale of a loveable rogue redeemed gives Davis a second crowd-pleasing success.
